Frequent Questions

  • I was told that my case was hopeless, why should I believe otherwise?
I understand first hand what it is like to be told that one’s case is hopeless and what it is like to feel like one is just setting themselves up for disappointment. A principle that will be introduced early on in our journey — we must first believe before we can achieve. Whether we are an athlete or enthusiast of a physical activity, being told that it is no longer safe or possible to do what we love can give rise to a profound sense of grief. Fear often accompanies this grief, especially when we feel as though a passionate part of our lives has suddenly been taken away. Rather than feeling fearful or ashamed of wanting to return to an activity we love, I believe that it is important to remember that Western medicine tends to follow a reductionist approach focused on reducing further injury, rather than steadily developing its capacity for work and resilience to stress.
  • Can you help me find my goals?
Life is full of twists, turns, trauma, and tragedy which can cause us to become “lost”. Rather than focusing upon the beauty, joy, excitement, wonderment, and opportunities available to us, we can become overwhelmed by change and chaos. I can help you with your unique goals by helping you: 1. Focus: On a particular goal or starting point. This will help provide further information and context on where we are starting. Whether we have established goals or not, choosing a specific goal to work towards will allow us to build a strong foundation so that you can move forward in other directions as you progress. 2. Finding a Goal: Giving you permission to dream. While some people are overwhelmed with choices, others might have trouble coming up with even a single goal to work with. This is another instance where the mind-body connection comes into play. I can help you build trust and a sense of safety, to help you dialogue and discover your unique goals. Sometimes clients simply need to gain confidence and trust in what their bodies are capable of — thereby cultivating a sense of hope in accomplishing something you have yet to achieve (regardless of age or a history of injury).
  • Can you help me stay on schedule with my goals?
I can help you stay on schedule to achieve your goals by mirroring and clarifying conversation to make sure that we have a shared understanding of your goals. I will also offer insight into how far we have progressed and what needs to be done in order to continue moving towards your goals — even when these goals pivot and shift. As you progress, we will often need to shift between various tools, concepts, and modalities to help you get where you’d like to be by meeting you where you are. While I can be your greatest cheerleader, I may need to offer up accountability. Sometimes you will love me and other times you will feel as though you hate me. These emotions are all natural aspects of the healing journey as you cultivate new tools, achieve goals, and look towards setting future goals in an increasingly independent manner.
  • Can I really do this?
Are you a human? Do you have a body? If yes, then the answer is yes. Anyone can, but few will. With the proper beliefs, knowledge, support and awareness so much is possible. Changing thoughts, beliefs, and conditioning require letting go of who we imagine ourselves to be, to become who we are meant to become. Transitional phases of life are rarely pretty, but necessary for evolution. No mud, no lotus. No friction, no progress. The past is in the past. The present is all that is guaranteed and allows the opportunity to build towards a greater future. Are you ready to let go of the old so you can be with the present and allow for transformation into the new?
  • How expensive will this be?
How much money have you invested in tools that don’t work or the quick fix? Breaking patterns, building resilience and balance in the body while reprogramming the body and mind are not easy things to do. How much time and how much of a financial investment this will be is entirely dependent on your willingness and ability to implement the tools and concepts presented along with where we are starting and where we would like to go together. I am both a generalist and a specialist, which means that you would typically have to see a team of individuals instead of a single person. I have invested (and continue to invest in) a broad range of programs, philosophies, and workshops to facilitate my own healing and bring the knowledge that I have gained to you. If I am investing in myself (and you with my time) isn’t it only fair that you invest in yourself as well?
  • How much time will this take?
How consistent, disciplined, and patient are you? The truth is that any type of worthwhile change takes both time and effort. Every person is unique, both in terms of their individual situation and goals. Rest assured that if you are willing to put in the effort, I will work with you to set up a program designed to allow you to see progress as you make your way towards your unique goals.
  • Can you help me achieve my goals?
The short answer is almost always a definitive, “yes”. However, each of us must believe, at least in the possibility of positive change, before we can achieve the results we seek. I have found, both personally and professionally, that our bodies are more capable than Western Medicine often leads us to believe. We are capable, versatile, adaptable creatures that can express, play, and move in beautiful ways — often regardless of what our diagnosis or injury might be. While not everyone will be able to achieve everything that they desire, the goal I offer to everyone, including you, the tools needed to feel safe within the body and enjoy exploring what your unique body can actually do and accomplish.
  • What do I need to heal?
I’m so glad that you asked this question. Experience has shown me that people can heal themselves given the proper tools and a willingness to utilize those tools appropriately and in a consistent manner. While I strive to isolate issues and develop prescriptions, ultimately, you are responsible for working with the movements and integrating them into your body’s natural movement patterns. Throughout this process, I will act as a guide and provide you with the anchors and concepts you need for support while you work to bring your body (and mind) back into balance while safely exploring not only your current abilities, but your limits as well.
  • What is the mind-body connection?
For our purposes the mind can be in the driver’s seat and the body can follow the lead (mind over matter.) We can also allow the body to be in the driver’s seat and allow the mind to follow. As we gain proficiency in the extremes we can begin to cultivate the grey area between leading to a dance of who is in the driver’s seat allowing for the discovery of how our body naturally wants to move through space, through resistance, through emotions, and the theory is that will then allow for a more fluid dance through life. As we address certain parts of the mind or body we have a symbiotic positive cascade of progress to the other areas as we open the container to the mind-body-spirit complex.
  • What do you mean by finding flow?
When the mind and body work together in an integrated manner, a feeling of flow naturally arises, often accompanied by a sensation of effortless effort. As you learn how to move and breath as an integrated being, you will naturally strengthen and deepen the connection between your mind and body. Giving yourself permission to let your body move as it desires, and your mind to explore movement in new and creative ways will allow you to experience this state of flow, which is often accompanied by sensations of harmony — with oneself, others, and your environment.
  • Why is breath so important?
Breath is with us from the time we enter this world to the time we exit it. We have conscious control of the breath meaning that it is the most “functional” movement for human beings. In monasteries and spiritual courses one of the first things introduced is breathwork. Why? If we have conscious control over the breath, we have conscious control over how we experience life. We can use the breath to regulate the nervous system, release emotions, improve health, decrease tension in the body, and improve vagal tone. How many of us have gone through life without being taught how to really breathe?
  • What do you mean that I can heal myself?
Most people in the Western world are taught that doctors are responsible for healing us when something goes wrong. In the United States we live within a system that emphasizes disease care more than building strength and developing healthy habits. My offerings provide a different approach that seek to bring you back to a state of homeostasis (balance) by treating the root cause instead of superficial symptoms. This approach has several advantages over simply “taking pills” or settling for “quick fixes” that are designed to mask symptoms instead of directly addressing causal factors and bringing you back in balance.
